So this is one of the three cheaper hotels right by the airport and I got sucked in for saving some money especially given how expensive FSM is. Rooms were OK, bit smelly - bathroom always flooded to almost ankle level water. Hot water was there, but never could be balanced or have any real pressure.
The staff seemed totally unequipped to dealing with guests - simple requests like asking for a towel would take 20 minutes. They had no idea what any tourist would want, couldn't recommend any sightseeing, tours, taxis, souvenirs or anything. Wifi in all of Chuuk was not great. Restaurant was good - would recommend that. Next time I would splurge and stay at the Blue Lagoon. It clearly is the place to be. Read more. Date of stay: December Location. Helpful Share. A hotel very near the airport with a large restaurant popular with locals. If there is a problem with the High Tide Hotel, it is the fact that I could not find any way to contact the hotel to make a reservation other than a local phone number -- which is a costly way to contact the hotel from another country. They have a Facebook page but nowhere is there a reservation form or email address. I finally got a local friend to make the reservation for me. My week long stay was ok, the hotel is average in terms of facilities and poor with regards to hot water in the bath and above average in terms of the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff.
There is no elevator so the third floor rooms do include a lot of stair climbing. A great advantage is the fact that it is literally right next to the airport terminal, less than a 3 minute walk away. They offer free transport for you to and from the terminal. The Internet is below average with many times I found it pretty much impossible to do more than very basic emails.
I did find that early in the morning that the restaurant WiFi worked a lot better than the system in the hotel. There are shops nearby for snacks and they offer a variety of snacks in the hotel lobby but the "downtown" area is about a 15 minute walk from the hotel. With a mixture of Asian, Pacific and American dishes on the menu, the High Tide restaurant has a generally good selection for most visitors to the island.
Portions are large and the quality ok though generally about the same as in the other hotel restaurants, relatively bland and not very special. I found their soups to be particularly good -- and large enough to be a meal though there is the oddity that they provide a small eggdrop soup as a starter for a main course of soup.
High Tide Hotel, Chuuk
A salad would better fit my idea of what the starter dish should be if soup is the main course. Breakfasts were good and filling with a reasonable range of selections including fish omelettes. Although in a separate building, the High Tide Restaurant is part of the High Tide Hotel complex and residents of the hotel can sign for their meals. For breakfasts and everyday meals, it is good and the prices are average.
I had injured my left knee the day before I came to Chuuk and was noticeably limping when I arrived and immediately the lady checking me in offered to switch me from the 3rd floor room I was assigned to a room on the first floor that was not generally used for foreign visitors. That was really very much appreciated and though I expect the third floor room was in some ways nicer, not having to climb to the 3rd floor with a bum knee was much nicer.
Every day someone on the staff offered special help in some way and that made it a really special place for me on this trip. I will be back there on my next visit. Date of stay: August Location.
